CIAM applauds GEMA in calling for supporting licensing outputs in generative AI

CIAM, the International Council of Music Creators, applauds at GEMA’s announcement supporting the licensing of generative AI outputs. CIAM has been advocating for licensing outputs, and welcomes the news as a necessary step towards sustainability for music creators in the era of AI.

CIAM also supports the white paper from Professor Daniel Gervais, released by Fair Trade Music International, which proposes a new right of remuneration vested in human authors, to level the playing field for music creators for the ongoing use of their works by generative AI platforms.

GEMA says that it is “the first collecting society worldwide to develop a licensing approach aiming to balance technological progress and the protection of creative work”. In its press release, the society points out that “Pure remuneration through a buyout, i.e. a one-off lump sum payment for training data, is not nearly sufficient to compensate authors in view of the revenues that can be generated.”

CIAM looks forward to further details from GEMA on the licensing model as presented at Reeperbahn Festival 2024, and how it can be put in place in order to achieve sustainability for music creators.
