Diego Drexler
For as long as I can remember, I have been immersed in creation and expression. On one hand, I was always fascinated by art. I studied plastic arts and participated in an urban intervention group called "La Tromba" that made murals around the city of Montevideo. That's why I studied graphic design at ORT University and Architecture at UDELAR (University of the Republic). Today I am a graphic designer and architect. On the other hand, I always had a leg in the world of music. I come from a family closely linked to music. I studied flute, guitar, bass, and I dare to play drums and piano. An interest in music production led me to set up my own studio "Estudio de las naranjas", which is my creative factory where I record my albums and produce other artists.
In 1997, I formed the band Cursi with which lasted until 2012. With Cursi, we released seven albums and a DVD (several of them released in Argentina), I had the chance to play all over Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay.
I have also recorded and produced many artists including Queyi and Sebastián Jantos.
In 2008, I had the honor to participate playing, recording and producing my brother Jorge's song "A la sombra del Ceibal", which became the anthem of Ceibal Plan. Since 2012, I have been part of the Agadu (Asociación General de Autores del Uruguay) Board of Directors, where we have developed cultural projects such as the Audiovisual Cycle "Autores en Vivo" and the multimodal broadcast platform "Pegaso".
I am also a bassist and guitarist in several musical groups including Queyi, Mariana Lucía, and Letra y Música.
Since 2013, I started playing live and composing as a soloist. At the end of 2014, Ayuí Records released my first solo work "de nuevo". Since 2015, I start touring and performing in Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Chile, Brazil and Paraguay. In 2017, we released the live album with Mariana Lucia and Queyi, "LUDIQUE", on CD and DVD, which was nominated for Best Audiovisual LP at the Graffiti Awards. In 2018, we release the EP "1978" with the pop-rock band "Los Travelin'Irvins", which was nominated for Best EP at the Graffiti Awards. In 2019, my second solo album "Pampero" was released via Ayuí Discos. "Pampero" obtained three Graffiti Awards nominations for "Best Urban Song Album", "Best Composer" and "Best Male Artist".
During 2020, I released the conceptual EP "Las cuatro estaciones de los sentidos” featuring four songs inspired by four seasons and conceived during confinement during the pandemic. Each song was released at the beginning of each change of season in the year. At the same time, we presented "Canciones Primas" along with Ana Prada, a joint project that brought together songs created especially for this performance.
In 2021, I released the EP "En vivo" with four songs recorded live at the "Vaz Ferreira" Hall of the National Library and "Eternos Misterios". My third solo album was released by Ayuí Discos. In 2022, "Eternos Misterios" was awarded the Grafitti Award for Best Pop Album. We also released "HAL-1984", edited by Sur Beats, with renowned DJ and electronic music producer Fernando Picón. An EP of electronic music with compositions in English and a retro electronic aesthetic. I was also elected as ALCAM (Latin American Alliance of Composers and Music Authors) Secretary and as a Board Member of CIAM (International Council of Music Creators). In 2023, thanks to the response to "Eternos Misterios", the "VIIVO" EP was released, including by four live songs recorded at the Sociedad Urbana de Villa Dolores in Montevideo.
In 2024, I was appointed as an advisory member for “Fair Trade Music International”. Based in Canada, the association is an independent movement dedicated to building an ethical, sustainable and transparent music ecosystem, equitable for all members of the music value chain.
