Podcast examines AI, music creator rights, and Prof Gervais white paper

Fair Trade Music International joined with CIAM for the release of a white paper written by Vanderbilt University Law School Professor Daniel Gervais, available to download here.

“The Remuneration of Music Creators for the Use of Their Works by Generative AI is a legal white paper that aims to address the challenge of ensuring ongoing compensation for music creators and their industry partners once most of the existing music has been used to train large language models. It proposes a possible new right that would equitably address the ethical issues surrounding creator remuneration.

The goal of the paper is to ensure creators retain agency as their life’s work is taken without their consent to create “content” that can compete with them in the marketplace.

A new podcast examines generative AI and the Gervais legal white paper. The podcast describes how AI is fed and trained, and how Gervais is saying musicians and creators should be compensated for works generated by AI through a right to remuneration.
