CIAM Paris ExCo seeks remuneration from AI and to empower African creators, meets with UNESCO

Fair remuneration in the case of AI and a focus on African creators dominated CIAM Executive Committee meetings in Paris, held at CISAC February 5th and 6th. The meeting sought to define a strategy for the upcoming term and discuss regional and global issues for music creators.

Regarding AI, discussions concentrated on the need for proper remuneration for creators and that fundamental rights (i.e., authors rights and copyright) are respected by all entities. This includes requesting permission from creators for the usage of works and providing transparency from AI developers on what works are used for training. Furthermore it is essential that creators don’t compete with “free” AI-generated works and that money stays in the music eco-system. To achieve this, AI-generated output must generate income for human creators.

CIAM will also focus on the African continent. Together with the African Music Academy (AMA), the goal is to ensure fair remuneration for African creators through establishing connections, empowering African music creators through mentoring, and to support transparent and well-governed CMOs in the region.

The ExCo also discussed challenges that streaming provides for creators, buy-outs for audiovisual composers, and different challenges and developments in those regions of CIAM’s partner alliances.

Following the meeting, CIAM President Arriën Molema visited UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris to lay the groundwork to collaborate supporting creativity and creators in the years to come. UNESCO has a focus on Africa and African creators as well as an interested in the challenges for creators and culture that AI has introduced. CIAM is seeking to join forces with UNESCO, thanks to these mutual goals, to create a brighter future for music creators today and over the years to come.
