2023 CIAM General Assembly

CIAM elections, GenAI licensing, creator panels and writing camp in focus for 2024 CIAM General Assembly this October

Co-hosted by SOCAN in one of the most vibrant cultural cities in the world, the 2024 CIAM General Assembly will take place October 23rd and 24th in Montreal. The General Assembly is CIAM’s key annual gathering of music creators, thought leaders, and industry professionals. Keynotes, industry panels, awards, and a women’s songwriting camp are all scheduled for the four days of activities.
 
This year’s General Assembly (GA) will see the announcement of election results for the new CIAM President and Executive Committee for 2024-2026. Canadian songwriter of numerous classic hits, Eddie Schwartz, will complete his six-year maximum term as CIAM President, and announce the election results on October 23rd at the GA.
 
Joining music creators will be SOCAN President Marc Ouellette, SOCAN CEO Jennifer Brown, CISAC Director General Gadi Oron and CISAC Chair Marcelo Castello Branco. Mr. Oron will be moderating a panel on collective management with Mr. Branco and CEO Brown. Legendary music creators Wally Badarou and ASCAP President Paul Williams will be participating in a special panel on the future of music creation.
 
Vanderbilt University Law School Professor Daniel Gervais, will keynote. Professor Gervais has authored a legal analysis white paper on a new remuneration right for music creators for the use of their works in generative AI platforms, co-sponsored by Fair Trade Music International and discussed in Music:Ally and Complete Music Update.
 
Fair Trade Music International will unveil its second annual awards. In 2023, Cape Verdean artist, lyricist and songwriter Solange Cesarovna and the late German songwriter and producer Jörg Evers were the inaugural award recipients.
 
The assembly will also be the first to hear the results of the international women’s songwriting camp taking place in conjunction with the CIAM GA. The camp will bringwomen from around the world together to collaborate and share their expertise in creating new, original songs.
